Lae, the capital of Morobe province, is the 2nd biggest city in PNG and it's economical centre. We arrived by ship from Oro Bay and had to catch another ship the same day which would take us to Kimbe on New Britain Island. Unfortunately this was the only ship going there for the rest of the week. Having the choice of spending one whole week in Lae or missing out and keep on sailing we decided to keep going. We were however able to catch a glimpse of Lae and its huge port.

The Morobe Queen is one of the larger ships of the Rabaul Shipping Company. For western standards it offers no luxuries. There's only a very few seats. It's overcrowded with people standing/lying/sitting everywhere. The most comfortable place to sleep is on the steel floor. If there is a spot big enough for you. Surely not big enough to stretch your legs. Every now and then water would splash on board, wetting everything and everyone. Children crying. Mothers breastfeeding. One old man playing the flute. One very long night.
